Wolfgang Puck is one of the world’s most successful chef-entrepreneurs. From his early start peeling vegetables at a local restaurant in Austria (his mother was a chef) to creating iconic LA restaurants Spago and Chinois, as well as over 100 restaurants worldwide, consumer products, a TV series and syndicated column – the man is a phenomenon.

“WHO d’you think you are – David Bailey?” For those of a certain age, this catchphrase from a Seventies’ TV advert for Olympus Trip pretty much summed up the godlike status that David Bailey had acquired. Born in North Leyton, he grew up in East Ham, left school at 15 and was conscripted into the RAF.

Raymond Blanc is in a jovial and expressive mood, beckoning me into the dining room for breakfast. Our very early meeting (I’m staying at Le Manoir overnight) is an entirely unarranged yet very welcome surprise; Monsieur Blanc has been a culinary hero of mine for years.

In the mid-seventies, the whole world was in love with Starsky & Hutch – Paul playing the sexy, wise-cracking Starksy opposite David Soul’s sensitive ‘Hutch’ in the cult US cop series. Now 70, he doesn’t want to talk S&H… “That was a long time ago,” he drawls, his voice even deeper. “A lot of people still love the show though, so I don’t mind being most known for it.”

Often overshadowed by his fabulous wife Jennifer Saunders, Ade is a multi-talented actor, writer and musician in his own right. He’s always been a hero of mine too, so it was great to chat to him just ahead of his gig at the Komedia.
